#1 User: “Computers configuration: 1.8 GHz, 256 MB RAM, 64 MB AGP, Windows XP

Problem: My CD ROM drive is ASUS-52x. Sometime it does not read some CDs and while reading sometime it is very cacophonic.”

Solution: Probably the power cable of your CD ROM drive is not attached well. Check that. Do not use CDs with scratches or low quality CDs. Contact your vendor for the noise problem.

#2 User: “After buying the PC, games used to work. But now games no more work. The game “Miami vice” requires 32 MB AGP but event tough I have 64MB AGP I cant play that game. When the game is loaded monitor’s display becomes black but the sound of the game works. “King of the road-II” used to work before. Used to hang sometime. Now it doesn’t work at all. “

Solution: It is not the main thing that AGP requirement is 32MB. Resolution and support of special effect is the important thing. Check if the latest version of directX is installed or not. Try to use the latest and of course the full version of your AGP’s driver.

#3 User: “Is it possible to protect any folder with password? How? It is said that in the help file of windows XP that if drives are formatted in NTFS than folders can be made private. But with format still I’m not able to folders that private. “

Solution: You can do that using softwares like “Folder Guard”. If the drive is formatted in NTFS you can set security policy of folder or files. For that you have to modify the options of security and encryption tab from the property of your file or folder.

#4 User: “What is compressed or zipped folder? How do they work? “

Solution:  Compressed or zipped folders are basically as files. But you can save many files together in those files. Saved files can be encrypted with password too. When you access compressed folders in explorer then explorer gives you access that those files as normal folders. Benefit is it takes less space.

#5 User: “I need better quality processor to do some animation work. I heard about AMD. Don’t know much about it. Is there any AMD processor equivalent to Intel Pentium-V 2.0 GHz or 3.0 GHz?”

Solution: AMD equivalent processors are Athlon XP 2400 or above.

#6 User: “I heard about cross platform of Apple computers. Also heard that Windows or Linux can be loaded that. Is that true? Can any windows based program run there?”

Solution: Yes, Windows can be loaded but only in PowerPC or iMac. May not get optimal performance.

#7 User: “Intel D915GAV motherboard has PCI express x16 connector for add on AGP. Now my question is can I use any latest 8x AGP there? Specially nVidia GeForce FX 5200. What is the benefit of having that PCI connector? What is the function of ‘Intel gma 900 DX 9.0 compatible onboard’ of that motherboard?

Solution: Intel gma 900 is an onboard graphic chip. Extra graphics card is not needed. But if you want to use any graphics card you have to use PCI express compatible one. GeForce 5200 won’t be supported by your motherboard.

#8 User: “My computers configuration is: Intel p4 (3.0 GHz), Intel 915 GVA, 120GB SATA HDD, RAM 1GB (512x2). I cannot set GeForce FX 5700 256 MB AGP card in my motherboard. I heard only PCI express compatible graphics cards can be set there. But I cannot play or use nay software of GeForce requirement. Because to play ‘Far cry’ or ‘Prince of Persia’ I need GeForce AGP. “

Solution: “Seems that you are busy to play games!!! Intel 915 GVA is the latest motherboard. Changing it what better will you get? Check other PCI express cards if they meet your game’s requirements. If they don’t support better you wait. May be in the future you can play better games in your pc.

#9 User: “I am using Windows XP professional edition. I have DirectX 9.0c. In the display option AGP Texture Acceleration option is dead. Is this a problem with my built in AGP of 915 GAV motherboard? Or problem with my windows or other software?”

Solution: That built in card dose not support that option. That’s why that is disabled.

#10 User: “How to make screen saver with ACDSee? How can I capture audio from video? How to record video?”

Solution: Screen saver cannot be made with ACDSee. For that thousands of softwares are there. Just jet the pictures. While saving the screen those pictures will be shown. You can use Hero soft 3000 to cut anything from a movie. For that you have to mark the start and the end point. If you are talking about capturing video from an external source like TV, Gaming consoles then you have to buy a video capture device for professional video recording.

#11 User: “After using my windows XP for few days windows login password was set. I didn’t do it. It was automatically set!!! But the password does not create any problem, the machine works. When the windows starts the welcome screen does not come because of the password. For that I tried to reinstall windows. But the installation does not work. Is instructs to uninstall the old windows or to remove the password. I don’t know the password. What to do?”

Solution: As you don’t know the password it seems that you are logging using guest account. Then the easy way is to boot from a bootable windows XP CD and remove your old windows XP installation and reinstall the windows.

#12 User: “I have been using ‘Bijoy’ software for past few years. I found that I cannot type using Bengali font in power point. After few day I also found that typing in Bengali is not possible in MS word. In windows font folder Bengali fonts are there in the windows font folder. Then I uninstalled the older version of ‘bijoy’ and installed the newer version. Still it is not working.”

Solution: don’t know if you tried to use ‘bijoy’ in the normal way or not. Specially try to install the MJ fonts.

#13 User: “Which one is stronger Windows XP or Longhorn? Is there any problem if I install windows XP frequently?”

Solution: Of course Longhorn is stronger and for this you need stronger PC too. If possible use that. Unnecessary installation is not good.

#14 User: “My computers configuration is Intel p-4 2.4E (GHz), 800 MHz FSB, H.T.T, 1 MB L2 cache. Can I use Gigabyte GA-81845PE RZ (Intel chip) motherboard with it? Or I need Intel’s motherboard with H.T. technology? Can I use 128 MB DDR RAM for that processor?”

Solution: You can use but it should support 800 MHz FSB. Your questions answer is already given!!! H.T.T = Hyper Threading Technology.

#15 User: “I had both windows XP and windows 98 together in my PC. One day I found a file of size 3GB in my D drive. That file cannot be viewed from Windows XP but from Windows 98. Thought since I don’t use Windows 98 anymore I can format it and remove it which is located in the C drive. Booting I logged into Windows XP then with the ‘Disk cleaner’ utility I formatted C drive. When I restarted windows I found the machine is not booting. “Non system disk” message is displayed.”

Solution: For dual booting important system files are kept in the C drive. Try reinstalling Windows XP again. It will find the older installed windows. Try upgrade or repair option. Remember many important files like nttldr, msdos.sys, io.sys, boot.ini are kept in the C drive.

#16 User: “How can I insert ring tomes into my cell phone from my PC? What do I need to do this? ”

Solution: For this you will need cable and its driver and software according to your cell phones model. You can download drivers and softwares from the manufacturer’s site.

#17 User: “When I start the pc it beeps thrice then hangs. There is no display in the monitor too. I tried to set the AGP card properly. Nothing happened. I tried another working AGP. Still no progress. Then is it that the problem is with my AGP card’s slot or the power supply? Now it does not beep but the LEDs of HDD, motherboard and the CD-RW is lighted. PC does not start. What can I do?”

Solution: You may have problem with your AGP card’s slot or power supply. May be your processor, Ram or the mother board is not working. Try to check each of them separately. Try to get help from an expert.

#18 User: “What does ‘NTFS’ mean? If the computers hangs I keep the power button pressed for 6 seconds to turn it off. Is there any problem if I do so?”

Solution: NTFS is the shorter form of NT File system. Windows NT/2k.CP uses this type of file system. NT means Network Technology which is going to be old soon.

#19 User: “When I turn the AC power switch on then the green LED of the casing and the motherboards LED are lighted for a second. With that the processor’s fan and the fan of the power supply rotates once. Then everything stops. It is just like a shock. Then with the casing’s power button I start the pc normally. How do I solve this problem?”

Solution: This might be the problem with your power supply. Try to change that.

#20 User: “Recently I disassembled my Pc than cleaned my AGP, processor and motherboard. When I assembled them everything started as usual. Then I was instructed to enter the BIOS pressing F4. Then without changing I exit the BIOS. When the computer reboots then the Intel’s logo is shown then a blank screen comes with a curser blinking in the upper left corner of the monitor. That stays for ½ minutes. Then everything is normal. What is the problem?”

Solution: When you were instructed to go to BIOS you might have missed any given information. That curser is displayed as long as it takes to enter into graphics mode from text mode.

#21 User: “PC’s configuration: Intel p-4 2.8E GHz processor (1MB L2 cache with HT), Intel 865 PERL motherboard, 256 DDR RAM, GeForce FX 5200 (128MB DDR) AGP, 40 GB Maxtor HDD, Samsung 17’’ monitor, Windows XP and Windows 98 (dual booting).

The game “Resident Evil3: Nemesis” works only in windows98 not in XP. But still I’m not able to play that in windows98. It is very slow. Does not load properly. I thought that low configuration game would work in my PC easily. “

Solution: Check if other games or graphics related programs work or not. Install the latest version of directX. Also use the latest driver for your AGP card. You can download it from your AGP’s manufacturer’s website.

#22 User: “I’m using prolink internal modem in windows XP/2000. Where the driver is shown as “Motorola SM56 Speakerphone modem”. Sometime both in windows XP and Windows200 a blue screen comes showing some message about the driver problem. Then the PC is shut down automatically. Again If I disconnect the line then to dial again I have to restart my PC. Otherwise if I dial the PC restarts. How do I overcome this problem?”

Solution: Many versions of the driver of that modem creates problem in Windows XP and Windows2000. You can download the latest driver from the manufacturer’s site. Else you can use it in Windows98.

#23 User: “Is there any software to cut the ‘.vob’ files from the DVD? Why the videos of 4/5min are 180-220 MB instead of 30-40MB? Is it for the Widescreen technique? I deleted a video file years ago. After that I didn’t use disk defragmenter or scan disk. I tried Norton and Fix IT. But could not recover.”

Solution: Yes there is. You can rip and convert in MPG format with “DVD Ripper”. There are many information in DVDs like subtitles in different languages. Also the quality dose not decreases if you make it full screen.

You can try “Recovery for all” software. It can find 1 year old deleted files also. You can recover if the place of the hard disk is not overwritten where the file was saved.

#24 User: “I have FSIST support socket 370, Intel 815 EP (B-step) chipset motherboard, 133MHz FSB, PC133 SD RAM. AGP 4x slot and CNR slot, ultra ATA 100, 4 USB support, Intel Celeron 1.0 GHz processor. Now with that configuration I add another piece of 128 MB RAM will I get the performance of having 1 piece of 256 MB RAM? Do I have to use the RAMs of the same manufacturer?”

Solution: Its better if the RAMs are of the same manufacturers. 256MB single module and two pieces of 128MB modules are same. Anyone will do.

#25 User: “What is zip drive?”

Solution: Zip drive is a removable mass storage media. It looks like a 3.5’’ floppy disk. It can store 256MB data. But this media is no more famous. CD, flash disks etc. has taken its position.

# 26 User: “I have a Pentium-III PC. There I have 128MB of SDRAM, 20GB H.D.D. I am using Windows2000 operating system. I am experiencing a problem with my explorer. While browsing if I click any link, instead of the corresponding page my windows media player opens.”

Solution: Click mouse’s right button on the links. Then from the pop up menu select ‘open link in new window’. Else click the links while ‘shift’ key is pressed. I think to open your ‘htm’ or ‘html’ files media player is being associated. For this go to My computer > tools > folder options > Filetypes then set the setting to default.

#27 User: “What is the difference between uninstalling and deleting programs? My PC’s configuration is: P-III 866 MHz, 810E motherboard, 128MB of RAM and 20 GB H.D.D. Recently I used disk defragmenter. Still there is 60% free space. But still my computer often hangs. Even when I am working with MS word only!!! For that I uninstalled all the games from the PC. Result is as before. Got no problem using Scan Disk. Still I have not got any illegal operation message. I don’t have a powerful AGP. So I play NFS-2. When I start the game the system gives the error message: “Your system is dangerously low on resource”. I’m using Norton 2004 trial version for virus protection”

Solution: When you install any program then the installer keeps different files in different locations. Normally it makes a folder in program files folder (for Windows). Sometime it keeps in the windows root or system directory. The files are so scattered that you cant find all of them easily.

When you uninstall something the uninstaller deletes those files and restores the original system files. Thus uninstaller removes any program cleanly. If you manually remove any folder or file of any program in that case shared windows system files, common files and some entries are left in the windows registry. Which unnecessarily occupies space. Sometime those registry entry may cause edition problem for you.

For the second problem check if the size of your registry has grown bigger or not. Try to repair your systems registry with software like ‘system mechanic’. You might have installed any 16 Bit software which was not uninstalled properly. Registry repair may make your pc faster. If nothing helps than it is better to reinstall the operating system cleanly. Make sure no hardware failure or miss match is causing those problem.

#28 User: “I have a PC with Celeron 700 MHz processor, 96MB RAM, 20GB of H.D.D, Intel 810 chipset motherboard, windows98 se as OS. Recently the ‘virtual tennis’ game generated an error. That was: “This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down…… VIRTUAL_TENNIS_PC caused an invalid page fault in module DDRAW.dll at 015f:baabf646”. Then it showed some registry value and some numbers as stack dump.”

Solution: DDRAW? Interesting. DDRAW means Direct Draw. It is a part of Direcex which helps games or multimedia applications to display 2D graphics. May be while installing that old game your DDRAW was replaced with the older version. Install direceX newly.

#29 User: “When I try to open the attached files like ‘.doc’ or ‘xls’ with emails my PC hangs. I tried changing my processor and RAM too. Nothing worked. How to solve this problem?”

Solution: This is not a problem with your RAM or processor. Do not open the attachments directly. First save them to disk. Keep your antivirus updated. As XLS files have macros enabled it might be the reason for your PC to hang as the antivirus software tries t o scan them.

#30 user: “My compact branded Pc hangs often. Even sometime it can be start leaving it off for a day!!! I have 128 MB of RAM. At first I thought that due to heat this is happening. That’s why I set 5 different cooling fans in different places in my casing. I changed the processors cooling fan too. Still that problem exists. I changed my processor to AMD Duran 750. I did clean installation of windows98 second edition. Nothing worked. Another problem is with my zip drive. I can floppy to floppy. But after copying for 2/3 times when try to read the floppy it says” “cant read from specified device”. That floppy causes the same problem in the other PCs too. Bt if I format that floppy then it works again.”

Solution: For your first problem, there might be bad sectors in your H.D.D which is making the PC hanged again and again. Run scan disk in ‘through’ mode. If it does not reboots normally that means either the system file is corrupted or hardware failure occurs. Scan disk with ‘surface’ can provide information. Check you hard disk drive. Try using another hard disk drive to figure out the problem.

Your floppy drives head might be faulty. That’s why sometime cant read floppy. Better instead of using floppy use flash disks.

#31 User: “My AGP is ASUS RADEON 700 (64MB), 265MB RAM. When I try to run the ‘thief: deadly shadow’ game the system checks the AGP than gives this message: “Your graphics card does not support pixel shadier 1.0” then nothing comes. The message goes away. Is there any way to run the game? What is pixel shadier? What is OpenGL?”

Solution: If the game does not work in the low resolution mode than you have to use a better graphics card with pixel shadier support.

pixel shadier is the new feature of the latest AGP. Some has 1.0 pixel shadier support some has 2.0. this technology makes the computer generated image or animated image move lively with colour distribution technique. This type of new feature is added often to the graphics cards.

OpenGL is the short form of Open Graphics Library. In high level languages programmers can use those reach and strong library to avoid longer portion of coding and can think of their own parts.
